Google TV LAUNCH

The upcoming Sony Internet TV will be the world's first HDTV to integrate the Android-based Google TV platform.

Sony and Google today announced an alliance to provide a range of new and rich entertainment experiences that combine Google's Android OS with Sony's expertise in technology and product design.

As the first step in this collaboration, Sony will introduce Sony Internet TV, the world's first TV to incorporate the Google TV platform. Through an easy-to-use interface, consumers will be able to search and access content from their TVs and across the Internet. Sony Internet TV is scheduled to first launch in the U.S. the Fall of 2010 with the lineup featuring both a standalone TV model and set top box-type unit incorporating a Blu-ray Disc drive.

Google TV Partners

In addition to Sony, Google TV is initially supported by the following companies: Intel, Logitech, Best Buy DISH Network and Adobe.

Google TV is based on the Android platform and runs the Google Chrome web browser. Users can access all of their usual TV channels as well as a world of Internet and cloud-based information and applications, including rich Adobe Flash based content. When coupled with the Intel Atom CE4100 processor, Intel's latest system-on-chip designed specifically for consumer electronics, the new platform aims to offer home theatre quality A/V performance.

Sony and Logitech will be delivering products based on the new Intel Atom processor and running Google TV later this year. While Google TV is designed to work with any TV operator, at launch the user experience will be fully optimized when paired with DISH Network.

The Google TV experience is complemented by the ability to watch streaming video from leading content platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, and YouTube. Google will also have the capability to run apps from the Android Market.

To navigate the array of content that will now be available through a single device and on a single screen, Google TV introduces an integrated search experience to help viewers easily find relevant content across over-the-air and pay-TV channel listings, DVR, and the Internet, as well as a picture-in-picture layout to access multiple windows simultaneously. Google TV also features an innovative home screen to help viewers quickly organize their favorite content and personalize their TV viewing experience. Some of these features are only available with advanced integration from DISH Network.

Logitech will introduce a companion box that brings Google TV to existing HDTV home entertainment systems, easily integrating with any brand or HDTV and set-top box. The companion box will incorporate Logitech's Harmony remote control technology, and will include a controller that combines keyboard and remote control capabilities. The company also plans to introduce an HDTV camera and video chat for Google TV, along with additional choices for navigation and control, including apps to turn a smartphone into an advanced controller for Google TV and home entertainment systems.

Finally, Adobe Flash Player 10.1 will be integrated directly into the Google Chrome browser on Google TV, enabling viewers to experience tens of millions of Web pages with rich Flash content including games, animations, applications, videos, audio and more.

Google also announced that they will soon release a set of TV specific APIs for web applications, encouraging Web developers to begin building unique Web applications for use on television sets. Later this year Google will also release an updated Android SDK, which will support applications built for Google TV.

Google also plans to open source the Google TV platform to help spur innovation in the industry and so that other developers can benefit from the project. The long term goal is to collaborate with the entire developer community to help drive entertainment in the living room forward and to introduce the next generation of TV-watching experience.

Tablet PC

Delivering his keynote at Microsoft's WinHEC conference, Bill Gates offers the audience a glimpse of a handheld-sized Tablet PC running Windows XP.

Having previously hinted that his company would seek to further shrink the size of tablets based on Windows operating systems, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates yesterday showed a concept of a handheld-sized tablet running Windows XP during his keynote at the WinHEC conference.

Microsoft Tablet PC Concept

Slightly larger than today's most sizeable Windows Mobile devices, the device is roughly half the size of current Tablet PC products and is likely aimed towards users who favour the portability and instant-on capabilities of handhelds yet require more power than such devices can currently offer.

Microsoft Tablet PC Concept

No details concerning the specifications of the concept were offered, however pictures suggest the device harbours a 5" touch screen, as well as an integrated digital camera. Feasibly, the device could also include a hard drive, however recent advances and price drops in solid state memory have made the possibility of basing such a device as this entirely around solid state technology quite likely.

Hewlett Packwards new laptop line: The Envy 14 and 17

Sleek and sexy is as important today as performance. Well, almost, but with its new Envy line, HP is hoping to cash in with a laptop that is both beautiful and substantial.

Let us focus on the appearance first. Both Envy's have a metal casing with subtle machined designs on the casing. The screens for both laptops are glass. The Envy 14 has a 14.5 inch screen, while the Envy 17 boasts a 17.3 inch screen. Both also incorporate backlit keyboards for those late nights. They both are around 1.5mm in size, and while not paper thin, the size is essential for the power these machines are packing.

The basic specs are as follows-

HP Envy 14. 14.5-inch screen, 5.25 pounds, Intel Core i3, i5, i7 CPUs, ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 GPU with 1GB GDDR3 RAM and BEATS audio.

HP Envy 17. 17.3-inch screen, 7.25 pounds, VGA, HDMI & Mini DisplayPort video outs, Intel Core i3, i5, i7 CPUs, ATI Mobility Radeon 5850 GPU with 1GB GDDR5 RAM and BEATS audio.

BEATS audio is an upgrade from previous models, and the Envy's also include a subwoofer, so with these machines there is no reason to worry about sub-par sound. If you need internet on the go, the Envy 14 has the option for built in wireless 3G, making connecting anywhere a breeze. Another new feature that comes with the Envy 17 is the ability to connect to multiple screens for gaming or applications. This feature is incredibly hard to find on laptops, but the Envy 17 pulls it off wonderfully, making it possible to have up to three screens connected! This is a must have for serious gamers. Both laptops incorporate optical drives, which their predecessor, the Envy 13, lacked. The USB and other ports are neatly spaced out, not cluttered in one area. Both models also offer the HP TrueVision HD webcam built it. With these new machines HP also improves their clickpad to recognize gestures such as finger scrolling and pinch-to-zoom.

Overall with its powerful hardware and improved visage, the HP Envy's are top of the line machines offering everything that a laptop user could ask for. The Envy 14 starts out at $999.00, and the Envy 17 at $1399.00. Take a look for yourself here.

HP MINI 5103

The new Mini 5103 from HP is virtually the same as the previous 5102 with one huge, gigantic, overwhelming difference and that is the dual-core Atom N550 processor from Intel that the 5013 ships with. The new Mini 5103 packs the new 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 Processor, 2GB of RAM, Broadcom's Crystal HD accelerator and runs Windows 7 Professional.

Multitasking feels faster on the 5103 than on other netbooks and then benchmarks are definitely better. Most netbooks score around 1,200 PCMark05 while the 5103 scored an impressive 1,866 PCMark05. Intel is still relying on its GMA 3150 graphics which menas no real change for the 5130. On the flip side, it is said that the processor should be able to handle 720p content with no problem as well as full screen flash videos.

The processor also speeds up video encoding, converting a 27MB .mov file to .mp4 in about 3mins. You already know the 5130 can handle HD playback as it comes with Broadcom's Crystal HD which allows the playing of local 720p and 1080p video in Windows Media Player. One good thing that Intel promised is that the dual-processor wouldn't impact battery life. Surprisingly enough they were telling the truth as the 5130 still has an impressive 6hrs of battery life.

Pricing is what most people are going to be concerned about with this new netbook. While HP has yet to release a final price on upgrading your existing processor to the new dual-core N550 from Intel or to acquiring the new 5130, you can surmise that it will cost no less than $600. For that price, however, you are receiving a netbook with a dual-core processor, higher resolution display, touchscreen, Windows 7 Pro and Broadcom's Crystal HD.
